Qatar Residency Visa Cancellation & 14-Day Grace Period Rules

Navigating residency timelines in Qatar is critical for expatriate workers transitioning between jobs or preparing for final departure.

Following updates issued by Qatar's Ministry of Interior (MOI), the grace period granted to expatriates following the cancellation or expiration of a Residence Permit (Iqama/QID) has been updated to 14 days.

Here is what every worker in Qatar must know to avoid daily overstay penalties and status complications.

1. The 14-Day Grace Period Explained

When your employment contract ends and your employer processes a QID Residence Permit Cancellation through the Metrash2 app or MOI portal, a legal clock starts immediately:

• Action Period: You have 14 calendar days from the exact date of visa cancellation to either:

  1. Transfer your sponsorship to a new employer in Qatar.

  2. Exit the country legally.

  3. Change your visa status to a family or self-sponsored residence visa (if eligible).

⚠️ Crucial Rule: The 14-day countdown begins on the date of official system cancellation, not when your employer informs you or when your final day at work occurs. Always ask for a copy of the official MOI cancellation receipt.

2. Daily Overstay Fine Calculation

If you remain in Qatar beyond the 14-day grace period without finalizing a sponsorship transfer or leaving the country, daily financial fines begin accruing automatically on your immigration file.

Expired Visit Visa / Entry Visa	QAR 200 per day

Example Calculation:

If your QID was cancelled on 1st September and you do not leave Qatar or complete your sponsorship transfer until 25th September:

• Allowed Grace Window (14 Days): 1st Sept to 15th Sept (No fine).

• Overstay Period: 10 days late (16th Sept to 25th Sept).

• Total Penalty Owed: $10 x days x QAR 10/day  = \ QAR100

3. What to Do If You Are Changing Jobs

If you are changing employers in Qatar, ensure your prospective new employer submits the electronic job transfer request via the Ministry of Labour portal before your current employer cancels your residency permit.

If your visa is already cancelled, your new employer must submit the transfer and settle any outstanding overstay fines directly through the Metrash2 system to freeze further penalty accrual.
